Supervisor in Training Minimum Qualifications

Individuals seeking the opportunity to become a Supervisor in Training for the Clinical Pastoral Education program at ICPT must:

  • Complete the Supervisor-in-Training (SIT) Program Application (under "Unit Type" indicate "SIT Track") and
    • Provide a letter of recommendation from a recognized CPE Supervisor;
    • Provide a reflective autobiographical report that denotes pivotal life events and relationships that have shaped you as a person;
    • Provide a two to three-page paper outlining your reasons for wanting to be considered for the SIT program;
    • Provide a short theory of supervision paper outlining the theories you are considering in your work as a Supervisor in Training (e.g. how I will facilitate growth during group process);
    • Provide a detailed case study/verbatim that reflects one's pastoral competency along with the applicant's personal analysis of the encounter; and
    • Provide a copy of your CPE Final Self-Evaluation and the CPE Supervisor’s Final Evaluation and transcript for all four CPE units.
  • Participate in a telephone interview with and approval by a member of the National Board;
  • Evidence experience in the field* OR provide proof of a Master of Divinity or a Masters, or Doctoral (or equivalent) degree in theology, counseling, or related discipline from an accredited school (or the equivalent course of study particular to the candidate’s faith tradition);
  • Provide evidence of current Board Certification or Equivalent Experience in the field*; and
  • Provide evidence a minimum of one year (2000 hours) of Pastoral experience.

Become a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Supervisors are a privileged few who are selected to conduct CPE training because of their commitment to the program and their adherence to the high standards set by ICPT. To become a CPE Supervisor, the following is required:

  • A completed employment application;
  • Evidence of completion of a minimum 4 units of CPE and completed the ICPT Supervisor-in-Training Program;
  • Evidence of experience in the field* OR provide proof of a Master of Divinity or a Masters, or Doctoral (or equivalent) degree in theology, counseling, or related discipline from an accredited school (or the equivalent course of study particular to the candidate’s faith tradition);
  • Evidence of current Board Certification or Equivalent Experience in the field*;
  • Evidence of a minimum of one year (2000 hours) of Pastoral experience;
  • Submission of a 5-7-page paper describing your theory of CPE Supervision; and
  • Participation in an extensive interview with the National Board.
